De-identification
Stripping identifiers from PHI so it's no longer subject to HIPAA.
De-identification removes 18 specific identifiers (Safe Harbor method) or applies a statistical methodology (Expert Determination) so a record can no longer be tied to an individual. Properly de-identified data is not PHI and falls outside HIPAA — useful for research and analytics.
