HIPAA

Federal law governing how health information is used, shared, and protected.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is the federal law that establishes rules for protecting health information. The pieces clinics deal with most are the Privacy Rule (who can see PHI), Security Rule (technical safeguards for ePHI), and Breach Notification Rule (what to do when data leaks).
