Electronic PHI — PHI stored or transmitted in digital form.
ePHI (electronic PHI) is PHI in any digital form: in your EHR database, in an email, on a backup tape, in a vendor's S3 bucket. The HIPAA Security Rule applies specifically to ePHI and dictates encryption-at-rest, audit logs, access controls, and similar technical safeguards.
